9 Lessons Learned: Aircrafts

What Does it Take to Maintain an Aircraft?

Regular aircraft maintenance and inspections are very important to keep an aircraft is good flying condition. There are many different ways by which aircrafts can be maintained so that all its parts are fully operational, and that is the reason why these complicated vehicles need professionals to service them thoroughly.

Here are the types of maintenance that need to be performed for any aircraft.

The basic mechanical structure of an aircraft which includes the fuselage, the wings, and the undercarriage is called the airframe. Airframe maintenance is only concerned with the basic mechanical structure which does not include other parts like the engine or the propulsion system. These are the types of maintenance works performed on the airframe: inspection and replacement of winglets, prevention and control of corrosion, painting, and replacement of landing gears. After travelling a specific number of miles in the air, there is a kind of maintenance which involve detailed inspections which are called ‘letter checks’. A and B are cosmetic checks, C is an intensive check of all the components and the D check is where the aircraft is taken apart and reassembled; these are the components of the letter check. A and B checks are more frequently done than the C and D checks which are time consuming and only done every few years.

Engine and APU (Auxiliary power unit) maintenance are also extremely important in aircraft maintenance. A mechanic that specializes in the aircraft’s specific engine type is tasked to do this type of maintenance. Comprehensive engine testing, removal and reinstallation, and troubleshooting are the different works involved in engine maintenance. Checking and regular maintenance of the APU is done in a similar fashion. There is power aside from the one needed for propulsion, and this is the APU which powers other functions of the aircraft. A specialized mechanic is needed to do this maintenance work; someone who is well versed in fixing the specific make and model of the APU.

The checking and repairing of other essential parts of the aircraft should be done regularly too. These are the activities involved in a complete aircraft components’ check: removing and cleaning components, applying anti-corrosion compounds, lubricating parts, and replacing parts that are damaged. Tests on the pneumatic and hydraulic systems of the aircraft are also done to ensure that they are running smoothly.

Avionics or aircraft electronics are very important factors in an aircraft’s overall performance. The focus of avionics testing and maintenance are all the navigation and communication equipment of the aircraft which includes GPS, radar, radio communications, and computer systems. When it is necessary, the technician will rewire and replace components. Someone who has a strong technical knowledge of electric engineering is the right mechanic to do this job. We can describe aircraft maintenance as an extensive and multifaceted process. Aircraft owners should understand the stages of maintenance so that you can stay aware of the condition of the aircraft and its performance capability.
